ABOUT THE CRITTER SITTER

Hi! I’m Tonya Berger, a.k.a. “The Critter Sitter”. I’ve lived in Davis, California for 31 years, and am a graduate of UC Davis. I’ve raised and trained Australian Shepherds for the past 28 years. We’ve had a great time competing in a variety of dog sports. Two of my Aussies have also done nursing home visits through a Therapy Dog organization.

While in college in southern California, I worked for two years as a lab technician in a program that trained handlers for wild animal parks and zoos. Through this program I learned to care for a wide variety of exotic animals. Over the years, I’ve hand-reared many baby birds and small mammals, including my two cats, Alfie and Hobbes. At one time, I even helped maintain a small flock of sheep. My years spent caring for a wide range of “critters”, combined with my love of animals, led to the start of The Critter Sitter in the summer of 1999. I’ve always felt that if I couldn’t be home to look after my animal family, I’d want someone just like me to do it! I offer in home care for pets and plants, making up to three visits per day.

Seven years later, I’m still caring for the pets that were with me in my first year of business. They’ve all become a part of my extended family. I’ve watched puppies and kittens grow into adulthood. Aside from dogs and cats, I’ve also looked after horses, parrots (large and small), rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, lizards, snakes, chinchillas and even a tarantula! Oh, and I mustn’t forget the “stick bugs”!! There’s never a dull moment, and I’ve had so much fun along the way.
